My headphones aren't in the list

Make sure both pairs are connected to your Mac — not just paired — in System Settings → Bluetooth. AirPods sometimes auto-switch to your iPhone; select them on the Mac and they'll appear in PairPlay right away. Some non-headphone devices are tucked behind "Show all devices" at the bottom of the list.

Why does a "PairPlay" device appear in System Settings → Sound?

That's the combined output PairPlay creates for your session — it's how macOS plays to two headphones at once. It's temporary: when you end the session or quit the app, it's removed and your previous output comes back automatically.

My keyboard volume keys stopped working during a session

That's macOS, not a bug: the system can't control the volume of a combined audio device, so the keys go quiet during a session. Use the two sliders in the PairPlay popover instead — that's exactly what they're for, and they work live while your movie plays. Everything returns to normal when you end the session.

The two headphones sound out of sync

PairPlay keeps both streams aligned with drift compensation, so they should stay together for a full movie. If you hear an echo, end the session and start it again — that rebuilds the combined device fresh. Bluetooth interference (a microwave, a crowded router shelf) can also add lag to one pair; moving the Mac a meter usually fixes more than you'd expect.

One pair disconnected mid-movie

Audio keeps playing on the remaining pair, and PairPlay shows a calm note in the popover. Reconnect the lost pair and start the session again to bring both back — your selection is remembered.

Can I use two different headphones? Do they have to be AirPods?

Any two Bluetooth headphones work, in any combination — AirPods with a ten-year-old Sony pair is fine. AirPods just get nicer icons.

How do I rename "Saad's AirPods Pro" to something else?

During a session, click the name above a slider and type a new one. PairPlay remembers it per device, so it sticks for every future movie night.

Where did the battery levels go?

PairPlay shows battery when macOS shares it, and hides it when it doesn't — recent versions of macOS no longer expose AirPods battery to sandboxed apps. Nothing is broken; it's just macOS being protective.

Does PairPlay work with wired headphones or speakers?

Yes — PairPlay can combine any two output devices, including a wired pair or your Mac's speakers, though it's designed around two Bluetooth headphones.

How do I make PairPlay start automatically?

Click the "…" in the corner of the popover and turn on Launch at Login. It starts quietly in the menu bar — no windows, no Dock icon.

Refunds

Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds go through them: visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and choose PairPlay. Apple usually decides within a day or two.

I found a bug

Email a short description to support@chaoticbyte.com. Include your macOS version, which headphones you were using, and whether it happened while starting, during playback, or while ending a session.

Can you add feature X?

Maybe. PairPlay stays deliberately small — two people, one Mac, separate volumes — so the bar is high, but every suggestion gets read.
